about us

Verbatim Books is a used and rare bookstore with an eclectic range of gently-loved and antiquarian books. Our stock is extremely curated to help you find quality editions of classics, favorites, and new discoveries. We also carry titles from over 200 local authors. Our zine corner is full of stuff made by local zine and chapbook creators, as well as some of the best from micro-distributors such as Burn All Books, Tan & Loose Press, Pioneers Press, Microcosm Publishing, Tiny Splendor, and more. Our walls are covered with work by San Diego artists and photographers to enhance your browsing and reading experience!

buying/trading

We are now buying every day from 11 AM - 5 PM! Bring a box or two of your books in and we'll have a look, and make you an offer on the ones we like. For customers with more than a few boxes of books, please use the email form below to generally describe the type/condition of your books, or even to provide a list of the titles, so that we can help you determine if they are books we are able to use.

We can pay approximately 20% in cash or 30% in store credit of the value of the books we can use. Store credit is good just like cash in our store; use it at any time and on any product.

Please note that we are extremely selective about the condition and quality of our books, though we do buy all types and genres of books. If the condition of the book is poor, it is unfortunately very unlikely we will be able to use it.

event space

If you are interested in renting our event space for a private event, please use the contact form on this page to describe the type and size of your event and the date/time of day the event would ideally be held. Please be as specific as possible regarding the ideal date/time.

Professional photo shoots can be arranged at very reasonable rates. Contact us with the date/time of day that you would like to shoot and how many people will be present. Please be as specific as possible regarding the date/time.

If you would like to “pitch” us an event to host as a part of our free event calendar, please use the contact form to describe in detail the event that you have planned and include a date or date range. Please be as specific as possible regarding the date/time.

map & directions

We are located in the heart of North Park, San Diego, California. The store is on the south-east corner of 30th Street and North Park Way. We are one block south of University Avenue on 30th Street. Please feel free to call us at (619) 501-7466 if you would like us to help direct you to our location.

why don't you have an online inventory?

We feel that the one of the benefits to being a brick-and-mortar bookstore in the age of instant gratification is to experience the pleasure of browsing the unknown and unfamiliar, and the joy of discovering something new. It is important to us to try and reserve our selection for physical browsers in order to heighten this experience. Of course, we are happy to check inventory for specific books for you if you contact us directly. If you would like to browse online and still support a local San Diego business, please check out Bluestocking Books in Hillcrest. Thanks for shopping local!

local author program

We do not buy new books, but we do support our local authors through our Local Author Program, which allows all authors currently residing in San Diego or Tijuana to put their book or zine in our store for sale on consignment. We do a 50/50 consignment split. If you are interested in joining the program, it's easy! Just bring 1 zine or 1-2 copies of your book into the store and fill out a short form. Then we'll get your book or zine out for sale ASAP.

contact us

Send us a message and we'll get back to you ASAP. For inquiries about books in stock, please call (619) 501-7466 during our business hours. Please note that we unfortunately cannot say if we will be interested in buying your books without seeing them in person.
